FAQ’s
What is a BID (Business Improvement District)?
A BID is a defined area where businesses invest in improvements beyond those provided by local authorities.
Each eligible business located in the designated BID area, pays a small percentage of their business rateable value to a collective pot administered by the BID Company and overseen by the levy-paying volunteer Board of Directors.
The average levy paid in the current BID is less than £6.50 per week, giving great value to businesses.
The revenue generated is ring fenced and invested into the BID area in line with the 5-year business plan.
BIDs operate under legislation and are carefully regulated. BIDs last for a maximum of five years before they must vote again to continue. There are over 350 BIDs across the UK, including neighbouring ones like Ashby, Hinckley, Loughborough and Leicester.
I want to know more about Melton BID?
Melton BID is an independent, not-for-profit company managed by a voluntary Board of Directors representing local levy-paying businesses. Any levy payer or voluntary contributor can apply to become a member. All Board members serve without remuneration. Melton BID supports businesses in our area through high profile and quality marketing, advocating on your behalf for better access and facilities and helping your finances and business by reducing costs through collective bargaining and attracting funding.
What do "Our Achievements" mean?
This webpage reflects on our progress in current term and welcomes your ideas to help shape our future term together. Maintaining Melton BID means an investment of more than £800,000 into Melton over the next five-year term. Preserving footfall, sales, and cost-saving initiatives, while helping our town thrive.
What does voting for a BID mean?
A BID only comes into being if businesses vote for it. If you pay the BID levy, you are eligible to vote. A majority “Yes” vote (by number and rateable value) will renew the BID for another five years, making the levy mandatory for all eligible businesses in the area
What Happens if it is a NO vote?
If the vote is “No,” Melton BID will end in October 2026. All current services, projects, marketing, events, business support and funding enhancements will come to an immediate stop. This includes the likes of the Christmas Events, Markets, Melton in Bloom, Pubwatch and SMART Schemes, the Recycling Scheme and the Website and Social Media platforms.
